When considering buying a microphone for your recording needs, it's necessary to chose carefully and keep in mind a few considerations. There are countless types of microphones which function in many different ways and have different applications.
A polar pattern is the space form where a microphone records sound.

Below you will find the main microphones pick up patterns:
OMNI:
an all round pick up pattern that, although prone to feedback issues, is excellent for recording ambiences and collective vocals.
CARDIOD: it is used as a simple recording studio solution when the sound that needs to be captured is coming into the main front area of the mic. Thgis is an excellent stage choice thanks to its feedback reduction qualities.
HYPER-CARDIOD: see cardiod type, with greater isolation from external feedback.

SHOTGUN: thanks to its tube shape, this mic is able to eliminate side feedback due to phase cancellation. This type of mic is ideal for TV/film work as well as for recordingh Foley sounds, due to its ability to be pole mounted to allow the sound engineer to be out of the frame shot.
Stereo Mic Techniques
Be aware of phase cancellation when recording in stereo, which presents itself when two renditions of the same sound (happening at a slightly different time) are joined together, resulting in sound overboosting or cancellations.
Always check in mono to avoid any trouble.
